Melanie Beck

Year 2 meet Melanie Beck MBE

The Year 2 children had the opportunity of meeting Melanie Beck MBE on Friday (9th May) morning.

Melanie spoke to the children about her career and how she has had an impact and influence around Milton Keynes.

Melanie has helped make Centre:MK (the city centre) a safer and friendlier place, organised events for people to enjoy, worked with shops and businesses to make Milton Keynes better, and helped during tough times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Melanie showed the children how one person can make a big difference. She cares about her city and works hard to help others. When Melanie was younger, she was a diving champion.

After sustaining an injury Melanie became a diving coach. She helped teach Tom Daley, who became one of Britain’s best divers. She currently serves as the Secretary of the World Aquatics Technical Diving Committee.

Her responsibilities have included overseeing diving events at multiple Olympic Games, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games. The children were very excited to watch a clip of people cliff diving and asked a range of questions.

Some of the children commented on the visit, saying:

“During Covid Melanie delivered food too people in Milton Keynes that were sick. It was really kind of her.”

“I like that she told facts about her like she can dive 21 metres.”

“I like that she showed us a video about someone diving.”

“I found it interesting that she was part of the Olympics.”

“I got to ask Melanie a question about diving, I really liked seeing the video of people cliff diving.”
