In Learning Blocks 5 and 6 the children in Reception became ‘Little Explorers’, travelling around the world from the Arctic to Africa comparing environments, culture and wildlife. During Music, Jonathan shared his collection of traditional African instruments for the children to explore and they were introduced to the fabulous sounds of traditional Inuit throat singing. The children particularly enjoyed our Space topic where they learnt how astronauts complete the simplest of tasks (like brushing their teeth) onboard the international space station with zero gravity. However, the firm favourite was certainly travelling back in time 250 million years with many of the children amazing us with their knowledge of dinosaurs. The children became mini palaeontologists, matching dinosaurs to their fossils and skeletons. We were however a little a concerned that many children, when asked, chose to have a pet dinosaur so that it would eat their teacher! To end this topic the children became pirates, looking at the features of maps, creating their own maps and hunting for treasure.
We are looking forward to our new topic this Learning Block, ‘It’s a Small World’.
