Year 1 Go Pole to Pole Learning About Animals at Tring Museum

The Year 1 children enjoyed an exciting and enriching morning trip to Tring Museum, where they explored the fascinating world of animals.

The visit began with an engaging 45-minute workshop, during which the children had the opportunity to closely observe, touch, and discuss a range of real animal specimens.

These included a penguin wing, a reindeer antler, a whale rib, an albatross skull and beak, and a walrus skull with tusks. The session encouraged the children to think carefully about the features of each specimen and what they might tell us about how the animals live.

Following the workshop, the children explored the museum galleries, where they saw a wide variety of animals from around the world.

They focused particularly on animals from the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Savannah, learning how different species have adapted to survive in these contrasting environments.

The children identified key features such as thick fur and blubber for cold climates, and long legs or camouflage for life in hotter regions.

Throughout the trip, the children demonstrated great curiosity and enthusiasm, asking thoughtful questions and making connections to their learning back in the classroom. It was a memorable experience that helped bring their topic on animals and habitats to life.

Some of the children shared their thoughts on the trip:

“I learnt about what a polar bear’s skull looks like. It had a big area for its nose so that it can smell very well.”

“I enjoyed touching the things (specimen), particularly the monkey!”

“I liked touching the fox and would like to go again!”
