Year 3 – My Super Earth & Victorian Change

Since January, the children in Year 3 have finished their topic learning linked to dinosaurs and have begun to learn about the Victorian era. To finish off their topic about dinosaurs, the children looked at where fossils can be found in the UK and considered how they are made. Linked to this, the children completed sketches of fossils using the skills they have learnt in Art to create shadows, texture and depth.

In Art, the children are now looking at mixing paints, considering primary and secondary colours. They have begun by using their sketching skills to create a self-portrait. Throughout the next learning block, they are going to develop their portraits using paint.

The children have also researched Mary Anning and they wrote fact files about why she was famous and what happened during her life.

After learning about the plants and animals that are found in rainforests, the children also considered how they are being cut down and why. They then created persuasive posters and speeches to try to save the rainforests!

For Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7 February, the children considered different scenarios that occur when they are online and how these make them feel. After this, they then created a timeline to show how often these scenarios happen to them and how confident they feel dealing with them.

In Science the children have been looking at what plants are made up of and what they need to be able to grow. The children have started an investigation where they are growing plants in various locations to see the impact this has. The different variations that the children are looking at are no light, no water or no warmth.

On Monday 13 February, 3HJ took part in a Ukrainian cultural workshop. During this workshop, the children drew and discussed a special person and had to think critically to describe why this individual was unique. The children were also introduced to a Ukrainian book and had to work together to decipher and re-order the Ukrainian words to match the English translation. The children thoroughly engaged with the activities and were inspired.

All in all, we’ve had a very busy couple of months in Year 3 and we are looking forward to continuing our learning on the Victorians, looking at developments within industry including the importance of the railways.
