Year 1 Explore Seasons and Senses

The Year 1 classes pulled on their welly boots and ventured out to explore the seasonal changes and the use of their senses during a recent trip to Howe Wood Park.

During the visit led by the Parks Trust, the children used their hands to feel for different textures that are in nature, comparing these to vocabulary cards.

They also had to identify different smells that come from nature such as mint, garlic and lavender, before making their own smell potions using items that they could find in the woods.

Whilst on their visit, they listened out for different sounds and tried to spot birds, squirrels and bird’s nests as the trees are still fairly bare for the Winter.

Finally, they explored different colours that could be found in nature and had to match some to colour cards.

A couple of children were kind enough to share their thoughts on the visit, saying:

“I liked the activities; I enjoyed learning about my senses.”

“I liked when we made the smell potions. We used grass, mud, leaves and a stick to make ours.”
