Year 4 children recently attended an educational visit to the Roman Villa ruins in Bancroft.

The trip was in support of their History topic, The Roman Empire, and helped the children to get a hands-on experience interacting with a civilisation that once ruled most of Great Britain until they deserted the land around 1600 years ago.

The children completed several activities that included a tour of the villa, which explained what a villa was at the time and what its purpose was.

The children worked out which rooms were in the villa, identifying their position within the overall building layout.

They were also able to look at real Roman artifacts, determining what they were used for during Roman times.

They even had the opportunity to work together to make small mosaic-style patterns using cubes, as a well-preserved mosaic was found at the site back in 1971.

The children had an enjoyable time in Bancroft, and some were kind enough to share comments on their day, saying:

“I liked looking in the bag at the artifacts that they found in the Roman Villa.”

 

“I enjoyed learning about the Romans and looking at the toga brooch that they wore.”

 

“I liked exploring the ruins and the fun activities that they gave us.”

 

“I liked the Roman talk, and I liked looking at the remains of the villa.”

 

“I liked the tour of the Roman Villa, and we got to touch the walls.”

 

“I liked touching the rocks and coins and learning more about the Romans.”
