Year 2 Take a Trip to the Past at Berkhamsted Castle

Year 2 took part in an educational trip to Berkhamsted Castle as part of their history curriculum.

During the trip, the children had an opportunity to observe the ancient ruins.

They had a guided tour, learning how and why the castle was built, who lived in it, how it developed over time, and why it is now a ruin.

The children had great fun learning new facts and building on their current knowledge about castles.

We found out that Berkhamsted Castle is only one of three castles in Britain to have two moats. With the rainfall we have had recently, the moat filled with water in two months. This has invited many wildlife to the area, such as geese, deer, and rare newts.

The children were kind enough to share their thoughts on the exciting trip:

“It was great climbing the Motte to where the Keep used to be.”

“There was a well at the top of the Motte and down in the Bailey.”

“We climbed into where the palace used to be and pretended to be Lords and Ladies.”

“The workmen showed us some newts they rescued before they put them in the moat.”

“They let us keep a piece of the wall that had broken off.”
